EVENTS

The Chelsea Coaching Group (CCG) runs a workshop or peer supervision at a great venue in the heart of Chelsea where we continue to attract a fantastic lineup of speakers willing to give up their time to educate, inform and develop coaches.

For all our Events, register your interest and get involved with the debate on our MeetUp page.

Workshops

We welcome coaches, both qualified and training, who are keen to network, develop, learn and grow.

Workshops are run in workshop format and they are usually follow one of the following themes:

  • Personal Developement and Transformation
  • The Coaching Dilema - Intervision
  • Marketing our businesses/ourselves

Fee (for venue hire, refreshments and speaker's travel expenses): £5

The first half hour is an opportunity to network with other coaches.  Snacks and drinks are provided. The meeting starts at 7pm with a few minutes on Group announcements; then the workshop commences. To avoid disruption to other members and out of respect for our external speaker there will be no admittance after 7pm.

Peer Supervision
This is a great opportunity for practicing coaches to resolve intractable issues arising during their coaching sessions.  There is a facilitator but no 'supervisor'.  Everyone can bring an issue to the table: everyone is encouraged to contribute to the discussion.

Topic: Peer Supervision

Peer Supervision is an opportunity for Coaches to share coaching related issues and receive support and guidance from fellow coaches based on their knowledge, skills and experiences. There is no 'senior' Coach; everyone is equal.

A facilitator will introduce the session and facilitate a group agreement. Once a group agreement has been established, the group share responsibility for ensuring everyone gets the most out of the supervision and all involved are valued and respected equally.

In previous peer supervision sessions, Coaches found that in expressing the problem to the group, they were able to gain perspective and reach some solutions themselves even before hearing from their peers.

Previous groups have discussed issues such as:

-        When is it right to prematurely end a contract with a Client?  And how?

-        What to do with a Client who has no goal? Should you force them to have a goal?

-        What to do if you become aware that a client is suicidal? Is it appropriate to coach a client who is very depressed?

       Chelsea Coaching Group News:

In recent years we have been fortunate to hold group meetings in the lovely Horizons building; unfortunately we will no longer have this luxury. We are doing our best to find another suitable venue to hold future meetings in. Please let us know if you know of any suitable venues in Chelsea that we can use.

-          February meeting:

On Thursday 20 February, we will have a presentation from Suzi Payton: a teacher and comedian.

Anita didn’t find out she was dyslexic until she was 35 years old. Her story of how, when she finally discovered she was dyslexic is both powerful and inspirational. But it wasn’t always like that.... Anita lived her early life thinking there was something “wrong” with her. She knew she wasn’t unintelligent, but didn’t seem to be able to grasp the basics. At school she felt utterly confused and isolated, wondering why she couldn’t comprehend how to spell, read and write like the other kids did. Despite trying hard, she left school with no qualifications and no self-esteem….....All because no one picked up she was dyslexic.

Introduction:

I‘m Anita and I read my first book aged 35 years old. I’m PASSIONATE about helping children, teenagers and adults fulfill their potential by overcoming their challenges, and embracing the gift, of being dyslexic. Now I want to share the techniques and learning’s that will allow you to break the chains of dyslexia forever.

In this Workshop you will discover:

• How to Embrace and Refining Dyslexia

• The Six Simple Keys to break the chains of Dyslexia

• How to recognise the strengths that our way of thinking has

• Strategies that you can use NOW to make life easier

Peer Supervision Session April 2013 - Review

Peer Supervision is performed within a group of peers - there is no 'senior' person - to solicit help from respected, experienced coaches to assist with problems arising during coaching practice.

This session was held at the home of Dr Jonathan Haverkampf (http://uk.linkedin.com/in/cjhaver) who facilitated the session.  As facilitator, he invited discussion topics, kept the discussion on track, managed time and gave everyone a voice.  As a peer he avoided giving an authoritative verdict on each issue.

Discussion 1: How do you feel about running a coaching session over Skype?

Discussion 2: When is it right to terminate a Client?  How do you terminate?  It is important to identify the appropriate professional discipline for the client/occasion.

Discussion 3: What do you do with a Client who has no goal? Should you force them to have a goal?

Discussion 4: How do you ensure that a client adopts a strong goal?

Discussion 5: What should you do if you become aware that a client is suicidal? Should the ground rules in this situation be declared up front (as part of the coaching agreement)? Is it appropriate to coach a client who is very depressed?

The next CCG peer supervision session will be held at 6:30pm on Thursday 9th May at the home of Jonathan Haverkampf.  No charge – just bring some ‘nibbles’.

6:30pm Thursday 21st March 2013 - INTERVISION Session - Review

Introduction

Jacqui Campbell, founder of the Chelsea Coaching Group, introduced Dr Jonathan Haverkampf who facilitated the session.

Intervision Process

Supervision is often used by coaches to solicit help from a senior, respected, experienced expert to assist them with problems arising during their coaching practice.  Jonathan explained that Intervision is similar to supervision, but it is performed among peers - there is no 'senior' person. The concept of a discussion within a group of peers without a range of seniority was alien to some of the coaches.  Any coaching-related topic would be permitted and each member of the Group was going to be group members and ‘supervisors’ in the session.

As facilitator, Jonathan would is required to gatekeep the issues to be discussed, keep the discussion on track, manage time and allow everyone a voice.  As a peer he would not giving an authoritative verdict on each issue.

Discussion

Issue 1:

My client does not stay with one goal and rapidly changes topic during a session.  It's frustrating.

   Discussion:

We need to be careful of trying to control our clients.

We need to be careful about imposing our own expectations on our clients.

We need to frequently check in with the client for confirmation that they are benefiting from the sessions.

Issue 2:

Should I take notes during a session?

   Discussion:

Notes help me prepare for the next session and concentrate during a session.

It is the client's responsibility to take notes.

If the client knows that I take notes, they make think that absolves them of their responsibility to take ownership of the outcome.

Process Review - Learning Opportunities

1.  Rather than 'Intervision' it would be clearer to use the term 'peer supervision'.

2.  Coaches found that by expressing the problem to the Group it took them a long way to solving the problem even before they heard their peers’ comments.

3.  It should be agreed at the start who has issues to raise and how many were are likely to discuss and how it will be decided when to move to the next issue.  One approach is to ask the Group at the start what our expectations are.  It was suggested that a token (eg. a shell) to indicate that the discussion is moving on to the next topic.

4.  It was agreed that the session was useful to coaches and should be run monthly, in parallel with the CCG workshop programme.

6:30 Thursday 21st February 2013, New Horizon Centre:

Speaker: Clare Foster-Gilbert, Director of Westminster Abbey Institute and founder of the Ethics Institute.

Claire created a reflective and relaxed environment as our coaches listened attentively to her interpretation of The Hero's Journey', by Joseph Campbell.
Claire showed how the Journey can manifest itself at different points of our lives through 10 key steps, from the 'ordinary world' of doing what we normally do through to the 'darkness' stage when we are filled with apprehension and fear as we step out of our comfort zone. Although 'claiming the prize' is the final step, the Journey does not end there as we have more life challenges to encounter and overcome. She stressed that we all have our unique stories to tell.

Using film clips to illustrate how different stages of the Journey may unfold, it became  apparent how we could apply the messages from the Journey to inspire our coaching clients.

This was an engaging and informative workshop which generated a high level of interest and discussion. For further information on the Hero's journey read Joseph Campbell's book or join our debate on LinkedIn.

Claire Foster is the Executive Director of a new charity, the Ethics Academy (www.ethicsacademy.org.uk), which teaches personal development combined with ethics, using the story of the hero’s journey. She has her own consultancies The Ethical Dimension (www.ethicaldimension.org), and The Environmental Dimension, working with schools, the public and businesses etc. Claire’s background is in theology, moral philosophy and environmental and medical ethics.  She has published numerous articles and edited and written several books, including The ethics of Medical Research on Humans (Cambridge University Press, 2001) and more recently Hero’s Journal (Ethics Academy, 2010).  Claire is also on the ethics committee that advises Prime Minister David Cameron.

During this workshop Claire will take participants through the stages of the hero's journey as they have been developed by the Ethics Academy for programmes in schools and with adults. This will be an exceptionally informative evening with a highly respected and qualified speaker. Claire has single handedly instigated this programme in many schools throughout the UK and is a remarkable woman.
